An Acknowledgement of Country is an opportunity to pay respect to the Traditional Custodians of the land you're on and acknowledge their continuing connection and custodianship of that area. Like Welcome to Country ceremonies, Acknowledgements of Country have been part of First Nations cultures for thousands
of years (Reconciliation Australia 2017). It's important that students are also supported to understand that Acknowledgements of Country are an important way that non-Indigenous people can begin to redress the
historical exclusion of First Nations people from Australia's national identity and democratic processes (e.g. the national anthem, the Constitution, voting and land rights, history books, the Australian flag).
