The Making of a Gunyah

Weaving

Karawun - Mat Rush - Lomandra -- longifolia and filiformis

This is a tall spiky grass-like plant with highly scented prickly white flowers. The leaves were used for making dilly bags and baskets. To make the leaves suitable for weaving, they were split into strips of suitable widths then softened by passing through hot ashes. The while leaf bases were eaten and these had a refreshing taste.
