Inclusion is important at Esk State School, because we value Respect, Learning and Safety. We believe that we have the moral mandate to be …
Empowering all young hearts and minds to achieve their potential in every facet of their life with confidence, courage and acceptance.
How to we do this?
Inclusive practices are required of everyone and are shaped by the 6 Ls.*
Lore: This is the story. The morals-laws-rules that underpin identity. It is seen in how we act when we are together. How we get along with everyone and everything. It is expressed through who we are and how we express our culture.
Love: This is about expressing love for self and others. It is about your love of what you do -- your work, your community, your families, your children, your school.
Look: This is about deliberate observation. The action of keeping eyes open, connected, and in tune with others and what is happening around you. It is about consciously observing and reflecting on what is occurring below the surface.
Listen: Whole of body listening. Are you really tuned in? Are you really hearing and tuned into what’s going on? Or just listening to respond, waiting for your turn to say what is on your mind?
Learn: Are you willing to assimilate new information? Are you open for honest communication and other people’s truth / perspectives? Are you open to not knowing? If you think you know everything you stop learning. You cannot learn anymore.
Lead: In the end, it is about you leading the way forward. Are you ready to lead with your strengths – together? Create the sense of belonging, while not taking power away? Be humble – no ego, no blame.
* Our framework for inclusion has been adopted from the work undertaken with Uncle Paul Gordon. Additional information on the 6L's can be found in ‘Iridescence: Finding your colours and living your story’, written by Paul Callaghan and Paul Gordon.
